Exploring the gap between textiles and digital fabrication, 9800-cloud utilizes the idea of the soft joint, turning a field of rigid plywood components into a quilt. A grasshopper script was generated to definea grid of 9800 triangles which were then deformed using attractor points to scew the cell sizes andscale the secondary apertures within the cells. The flat pattern is altered and offset for the layered materials (wood - chipboard - felt) to take advantage of their structural and visual qualities, and is then broken up into 18”x32” sheets to be laser cut. This sheet based method of assembly decreased build time and allows for rapid serial gluing. This combination, flexible but sturdy, allows the flat piece to be suspended from the ceiling and fall comfortably into a number of attractively curvatious three-dimensional forms.
